Michael Phelps Racing a Great White For Shark Week
Life must get a little boring when you’ve peaked by age 30. Sure, it certainly doesn’t suck to be Michael Phelps. He has millions of dollars, fame, and is a record-setting gold medallist who will never want for anything again in his life. But he’s “too old” to continue competing competitively doing the one thing he’s trained his entire life to do: swim. So when Discovery Channel came to him with an idea to race a great white shark, I’m sure he couldn’t sign the paperwork fast enough.
From the Discovery press release:
They are one of the fastest and most efficient predators on the planet: Sharks. He is our greatest champion to ever get in the water: Michael Phelps. 39 world records. 23 Olympic golds. But he has one competition left to win. An event so monumental no one has ever attempted it before. The world’s most decorated athlete takes on the ocean’s most efficient predator: Phelps V Shark – the race is on! Produced by Peacock Productions.
The tie-in of course is Discovery’s annual ‘Shark Week’. The week has lost its luster over the years as they usually just air the same programming from the prior year, but this offers something new and exciting. Maybe if Phelps wins, next year instead of racing the shark, they’ll be put into the same lane and he’ll need to swim away from the shark for survivor.
Who wouldn’t watch that?
